To some extent, I see this as Salesforce borrowing from Microsoft's playbook in their attempt to compete. When Microsoft quickly and seemingly effortlessly grew Teams to ten times the size of Slack, their snark quickly disappeared, and Slack's founders began casting about for an acquisition suitor, finding a very willing one in Salesforce. Slack had first stepped up to take on Microsoft Teams publishing snarky NY Times ad in which they admonished and teased their supposed competitor. So what does this acquisition mean to Microsoft and is this a serious threat to Microsoft Teams? Become the interactive communications and collaboration platform of choice and leverage that to guide customers happily into the balance of their platform offerings. While Salesforce has been making all manner of acquisitions in their efforts to go up against the Redmond giant, it is their largest purchase to date, Slack, that clarifies their strategy. In the user productivity space, Google is undoubtedly a viable competitor for Microsoft, but it is Salesforce that is working hard to be the category killer. Teams have rapidly enjoyed huge acceptance by millions of users, making it clear the communications and collaboration platform to beat. Office/Microsoft 365 is clearly an enormous big bet that came around as yet another big bet with the addition of Teams, which incorporates communications and enhanced collaboration with the premier productivity suite, placing it in the center of Microsoft's universe. Microsoft partners like Henson Group are very familiar with the Microsoft concept of the "Big Bet." It's the platform Microsoft is currently investing in most.
